Figure Friday: Painted Renly Baratheon

Painted Renly Baratheon

Last week I showcased my first full unit of Baratheons for the Song of Ice and Fire Miniatures game: the Baratheon Wardens. This week I want to focus on one figure that I painted over the course of a weekend back in March: Renly Baratheon.

What I Like

I’m very happy with how Renly’s armor turned out! I initially tried an Army Painter pre-mixed green metallic paint but it was far to bright for how the rest of my Song of Ice and Fire Miniatures look. Instead, I mixed Army Painter Plate Mail Metal and Citadel’s Caliban Green for a nice dark green to bring his infamous armor to life. For fans of the series, this armor is worn by Loras Tyrell to help smash Stannis’ army arriving in King’s Landing, giving the impression Renly’s ghost had arrived to save the day. I finished the armor by using a gloss varnish to give it more of a shiny look.

I also think the Caliban Green with gold accents in the stag and sword show Renly’s close ties with the Tyrell’s, while also looking a bit Baratheon. I’m just happy with how the overall look turned out.

What I Want to Improve

I rely too much on using Citadel’s Contrast pain for skin tones, so when I get something darker like Renly’s black hair on top of a spot of skin it can be pretty tricky to clean up. I’d like to actually paint skin tone with regular paints to avoid this issue moving forward.

The Paints I Used

  • Plate Armor: Army Painter Plate Mail Metal mixed with Citadel Caliban Green
  • Sword: Army Painter Plate Mail Metal
  • Skirt: Citadel Caliban Green
  • Gold Stag and Sword Guard/Pommel: Army Painter Bright Gold
  • Undercoat and Hair: Citadel Abaddon Black
  • Belt, Scabbard and Sword Grip: Vallejo Chocolate Brown
  • Face: Citadel Contrast Gulliman Flesh
  • Wash: Citadel Nuln Oil

That’s it for another Figure Friday. I don’t have any other painted Baratheon’s to show off just yet, but check back next week for another addition from Westeros in the form of a gentle giant!
