Figure Friday: Painted Baratheon Wardens

I bought the Baratheon army starter set way back in October 2020, wanting a change in pace from Lannister Red, Stark White, and the Night’s Watch black. I painted a few prototype figures so I could figure out my color scheme, but for some reason I just stalled out on painting many more of them. After a year and a half delay, I’ve finally finished my first unit of Baratheons: the heavily armored Wardens.

November 2020: My prototype Stag Knight, Warden, and Sentinel.

What I Like

Honestly, I think these guys look badass. Sure, the designers got a little lazy in giving every unit in the starter set a warhammer thanks to Robert Baratheon’s skill with one, but I loved painting something other than a sword for a change.

When I can get the yellow paint to work, I feel like it really pops out from all of the plate metal, giving the army a very distinct look. I was able to carry over some of the gold detail work from my Lannister units to make some of the armor details stand out for the Wardens.

Even though it’s difficult to take a good photo of the full unit, I adore how the fully tray looks in person.

What I Want to Improve

Yellow. It’s such a pain to paint with, I need to learn more about the best ways to build it up so it’s a bit more consistent. I’d also like to improve some of the smaller details on the shield – it’s really tough to touch up around the stag without making more of a mess. In particular, the bannerman’s flag could use some more work on smoothing out the yellow. Finally, some of the warhammers are a little warped for various reasons, I should take more time trying to straighten those out.

The Paints I Used

  • Plate Armor: Army Painter Plate Mail Metal
  • Baratheon Yellow: Citadel Averland Sunset
  • Gold Stag: Army Painter Bright Gold
  • Undercoat and Shield Stag: Citadel Abaddon Black
  • Shield Layer: Army Painter Rough Iron
  • Belt, Straps, and Hammer shaft: Vallejo Chocolate Brown
  • Wash: Citadel Nuln Oil

I hope you like my Baratheon Wardens as much as I do! I’ve got some more figures from A Song of Ice and Fire to showcase, as well as the rest of the Marvel United heroes. Check back next week for another Figure Friday!
